PENDANA – SOLD

ADIOS!

Funny how life changes on a dime!  One minute you are in control and have a pretty good understanding of where one is headed and the next, BAM! Everything changes.

A little while ago Claire and I received an unsolicited offer for Pendana.  After much discussion with Claire and the girls we decided to accept the offer on the basis that it complete quickly. The idea of hanging around on a boat that I wouldn’t own was not very appealing to say the least.

Wow how the girls have grown

As most would know the plan was to get to Florida and reassess our options, six months on, six months off, sell, or buy a bigger boat. The likelihood however, is, we would have probably sold.  After nearly six years of owning Pendana and three and half years full time cruising (four and a half if we got to Florida), we decided it was time to regroup, head back to Australia and make our children a priority.

There really are no words to describe how I feel about Pendana.  The little ship that could, did, and kept our family safe in some pretty horrendous conditions will forever remain in our hearts.  Pendana never missed a beat and while showered with love, and let’s not forget money, she simply never let us down.  There are, not too many who can say that.  The trusty N62 hull is without doubt the best ocean boat Nordhavn ever made with the N57 a close second!

Part of our decision to sell was, the new owners (previous Nordhavn owners) actually were engaged on Pendana eight years ago in the Bahamas as they knew the previous owner very well.  They are super nice people and Claire and I truly believe they will cherish Pendana and take care of her in the years ahead, as we have done.  If not, watch out!  We simply would not have sold the boat to people we didn’t like or respect, it’s that simple!

A special thanks must be made to two men in particular, in this, the final Pendana blog. Firstly, Mr Ken Williams, aboard N68  San Souci.  I distinctly remember calling Ken before we bought Pendana to ask for advice.  I then, remember calling Ken to tell him we were going to cross Oceans, to which I have no doubt he felt a great deal of responsibility for, after all, he encouraged it. Ken and his wife Roberta have become friends over the years and I will sorely miss our little chats.  Ken, simply two heartfelt words, thank you.

Ken and Roberta Wlliams

Secondly a huge thank you has to go out to James Knight from  Yacht tech Sales and Service in Florida and soon to be open for business in Anacortes WA.  Claire and I bought Pendana from James Knight back in 2012 and this man has been there ever since to answer any question I had, whatever the time of day.  If you own a Nordhavn and are not speaking to James Knight, then you are truly missing out.  James has forgotten more about Nordhavns than most people know.  James, my sincere thanks for all your help over the years! Thank you.

James Knight with his son.

There are literally so many others to thank, but rather writing a thesis I will keep it brief and simply say, you all know who you are and know that Claire and I are truly grateful for our  friendship that is now firmly in place.

So, there is little left to say other than in a few days from now I will be back in Australia with my girls turning a new page in life and consolidating before our next adventure begins.  Will we be back on the high seas? Only time will tell, but I am confident we will!

Thank you very much to all the readers of the blog over the years and for your kind words of support, encouragement and interest in what was simply, a family heading to sea! Both Claire and I have made lifelong friends who we will never forget.

The sun has now officially set on Pendana

So, for the very last time, stay safe!

James

    James,

Amazing News and well done. Michelle and I were grateful to get a tour of her in LA. Amazing how fast those plans change, but we wish you all the best back in Australia and the new owners for their wise decision to get a the “Great little ship – Pendana”.

  9. Both congratulations (on your sale of Pendana), but also condolences to some extent. Ken and I know how difficult this is for you and Claire – because you’re not only going to be missing your boat, but your dream as well. But things change in life — it’s what it’s all about — and often it’s necessary to follow the water course of life (to use a mariner theme), which means that water will always find its way no matter what you do, and sometimes it just best to follow it. But as Ken and I have often experienced, when one chapter ends, another one opens, and often the next chapter is even better than the old one. At least that’s the way it’s been for us. So look forward to the next chapter and I’m betting that it will be more fun, more adventurous and just as long-lasting in your memories as any of the prior chapters. Look forward!!! Roberta (and Ken)

So sorry I have no idea either how you were added to the blog. Nonetheless I’m glad you enjoyed it so to fill in the mystery we were a family who traveled across the Pacific ocean in a small powerboat. Alas, it’s now time to return to Australia and enjoy life on the land once again. That being said however, need to watch out for the final web spiders once again in Sydney. Enjoy Florida and life on the lake!

    James,

I have thoroughly enjoyed your writings and your insights into owning a Nordhavn. As you may recall, you generously gave my wife Leslie and me a tour of Pendana when you were in Seattle. We learned a lot from the tour and speaking with you about the process of selecting a boat. We are now awaiting delivery of 6316 and looking forward to long distance cruising once I retire. You certainly helped us in making this decision and I want to thank you for that.

  25. Thank you James … although i haven’t commented as often as i should have , i have always looked forward to your latest installments .
I’ll warn the authorities you are heading back this way 🙂 🙂

  27. I’ve re-read this latest (last?) blog entry about 6 times. Surely I’ve made a mistake? No,,, James and Claire have sold PENDANA!

WOW!! Well, I guess this decision was well considered and mirrors the changes that are occuring in the Ellingford household, and so it seems CONGRATULATIONS are in order!! ????
The boats are only on loan, we are just the custodians. You guys should be justifiably proud knowing you treated PENDANA with all the dignity and passion that your thoroughbred deserved. You have done your job admirably. ??
Here’s to the next chapter in your life – and may it be as rewarding and fun as your time with us in the Nordhavn fraternity. God bless. ??

  34. James, I just wanted to write and express my appreciation for all of the effort you invested in creating and writing your blog. I stumbled on your blog relatively late in it’s life but enjoyed reading about your journey. I found it quite captivating to learn about the amount of hard work involved in keeping Pendana “ship shape” and safe for you and your family. The constant need for repairs and upgrading of equipment was amazing and the amount of detail you published was inspirational. Many times I’d read the blog while I was “working” in the office and I’d find myself drifting off and imagining another life away from the drudgery of my desk. A life very similar to the one that you were living, when I read your blog I found myself thinking that I could be a salty dog without fear of the high seas and have the mental capacity to understand the complexity of the systems that a Nordhaven trawler has. Then the phone would ring and I’d be back in my own reality. I wish all the best for you and your family in the future. I have no doubts that generations of your family will enjoy reading the historic document that you created and be inspired to explore their own lives to the full. Thanks so much for the hours of pleasure you gave me!

Thank you Mark for the lovely message, I too drift away and then the stark reality of being back in Sydney hits me like a freight train so I truly understand the JOLT thats involved, now more than ever! I am pleased my musings provided a little light relief to your day and once again thank you for your kind words. You never know, one day we may be back on the water once again but for now looks like a land locked life for the next few years.

Thank you once again for your kind words.

Very sad indeed,, Before I flew out of LA I drove down to the marina one last time and did notice the vessel you are speaking of in our spot… just didnt look right! Made it back to Sydney and all AOK this end although Claire and I did sneak out yesterday to go and look at a 75ft boat but thankfully common sense took hold and we walked away before signing up. No doubt we will be back on the water again at some stage.. Hope you guys are dong well and thank you for the friendship. All the very best to you both.
