Kodiak Alaska to Seward

There are simply no words to describe the majesty of Kodiak, Alaska and, as such, this will be more a pictorial blog to help capture the beauty of the place.

We are all so pleased we came this way otherwise we would have missed, what may possibly be, the jewel in earths crown. There is rawness about this place, a sense of freedom and pride within its people and a landscape that beckons you forward. There is no pretence about Kodiak, its people or its landscape but rather a simple understatement of just being.

All the photos in this blog are taken as is, as frankly there is no improving the perfection of this place. If you ever get the chance to visit Kodiak do not pass it up as I am sure you will be as impressed as we have been.

There is one thing I need to say which is a negative about Kodiak and that is the internet speeds are somewhat pre-historic. I combat this by waking early before the residents of Kodiak jam the limited bandwidth that is available. The girls now realise that streaming everything is sometimes simply not possible. To alleviate the issue of bandwidth I have taken to using the satellite during Peak Ellingford Consumption Periods (“PECPs”). Thank God for Talkspot’s post to blog via email feature called ‘Otto’ as without that low bandwidth option none of these blogs would be possible. For those boating or in remote areas or for those who want simply an easier way to blog, then I can vouch for, and highly recommend the Talkspot platform and it ‘Otto’ feature.

Now for some statistics on our trip from Hawaii to Kodiak.

Engine hours: 268 or in other words eleven days four hours from start up to shut down!

Total fuel used: 1,745USG (includes approx. 10 hours gen time)

Nautical miles per gallon: 1.27

Average speed over ground: 8.32kts

Distance travelled: 2,230nms

Distance travelled since leaving Sydney Australia: 7,700nms

Max roll to port: 11 degrees

Max roll to starboard: 17 degrees

Average wind speed: 12.1kts

** Note this makes Pendana not only the most economical Nordhavn 62 in the World but also the fastest over long distances.

Believe it or not this guy (local resident Billy Copper) actually caught this salmon while we were there!

On the mechanical front we are in good shape. Abi and I did the oil change on the main engine yesterday which took one hour and five minutes (we getting better!), changed our house fresh water filters and other than the shower sump pump failing, yet again, in the master cabin, which is now fixed I might add, there have been no other issues to report.

The girls, and in particular Abi, are truly loving Kodiak and the cooler climate of Alaska. Abi actually said that she could live here (well, six months a year at least)! Bianca is amazed at the scenery and Claire is in awe of Kodiak as well, but is still missing the warmth from her one true love, Hawaii!

We plan to depart for Seward on Friday or Saturday once the winds ease just a little. This will/should be an easy 185nm run which will take us about 22 hours in all. So, the journey continues.
